Choose Contacts: The Advantages of Lenses for Teenagers

Requiring glasses is often difficult for a teen. Just the thought of wearing glasses can make a teen go to pieces. Compared to glasses, kids and teenagers that wear contact lenses feel a significant improvement in their looks, a newly published report demonstrates. The research report suggests that starting at the age of eight, children should be given the choice of lenses. Researchers published the study in the November issue of Eye & Contact Lens, published by the Contact Lens Association.

In what way do contact lenses improve teenagers' self esteem? Adolescents are insecure, and they generally feel better about themselves if they don't have eye glasses being the focus of their appearance. Lenses can help teens have a sense of greater self-esteem and more comfort around others by giving them a less visible option for their vision needs.

Although teens are frequently provided with contact lenses, children under thirteen are typically not offered the choice of contacts, because eye care practitioners and parents don't believe that children have the proper maturity to deal with them appropriately. However, with proper guidance, even at age eight, children are just as competent at using and tending for contacts and they should be offered the option.

Generally before your child tries contacts you will want to speak to your eye doctor to go over any possible problems your child might encounter. Our Hamburg optometry practice will be glad to assist you to come up with the right plan for your young adult's contact lenses.

If your pre-teen or adolescent is in need of vision correction, why not consider contact lenses? Through just a simple soft lens, you can really change your teen's life. With the wide selection of contacts available, you and your eye doctor can work with your child to determine what type of lens is most suitable for their personality, maturity and lifestyle.
