Eye Safety in the Home

In honor of Home and Sports Eye Safety Month, we're going to highlight ways to keep your home eye safe specifically when selecting eye safe toys. It's important to be proactive to make sure your home doesn't pose any series dangers to your children's eyes.

Generally, children enter the world with a partially developed visual system that grows as they get older. In the beginning, newborns can see objects at close range only. All through their developing years, children are visually stimulated. Children's games and toys can be one of the easiest methods for stimulating a youngster's sight. Nevertheless, it's important to consider that a large number of childhood mishaps take place at home, many of them with games and toys.

How can you avoid compromising your child's sight? There are many steps you can take when selecting toys and games for the house to ensure your child's eye safety.

First of all, check that toys with long handles - such as sticks- aren't sharp-edged, and prohibit or monitor young children carefully if they are handling them. Though blocks pose little danger for almost any age, it's good to make sure the edges are blunted, in order to prevent eye accidents. It's suggested that you avoid shooting toys, such as slingshots or dart guns. In an instance where you can't eliminate them altogether, then shooting toys should only be used when accompanied by a responsible grown-up. When letting older children play with a chemistry set or woodworking tools, be sure he or she wears protective goggles.

Is there anything else that can be hazardous in the home environment? Toys are actually just the beginning. As a parent, it's your job to go through the house and ensure there's nothing that could endanger your children and their eyes. One of the most common dangers is hazardous materials that haven't been carefully put away. If a child can reach these chemicals their eyes are in danger.

While it's true that toys won't always be totally risk-free, there are lots of excellent playthings that can contribute to children's eyesight. There are a number of age-appropriate toys for youngsters that offer great ways to advance visual development. When purchasing toys for kids, go for those that focus on hand-eye coordination and will encourage youngsters to learn about colors, shapes and space. You may want to consider trying to do some research before making a purchase. Then you can ensure that your purchase is safe for your child's eyes and will enrich their visual development as well!
